The amazing Crossness Pumping Station was designed 150 years ago by Joseph Bazalgette in response to cholera outbreaks and the Great Stink of 1858, when the smell of untreated human waste became unbearable and affected parliament. The Crossness Engines Trust, a registered charity, is currently restoring the engines which represent a unique part of Britain's industrial heritage and an outstanding example of Victorian engineering.
