The magnificent grey heron (Ardea cinerea) is a large, tall bird that measures up to 98cm long and has a wingspan of up to 195cm, among the largest of any UK bird. The plumage is mostly grey on the wings with a white head and neck that has a distinctive spotted pattern along its underside.
They feed mainly on fish and are expert at catching them, they can stand perfectly still, sometimes for hours, whilst gazing into the water and awaiting their chance to strike!
